Theory-test support for reading difficulties or health conditions
Request theory-test support when you book and send any evidence promptly so DVSA can arrange the right help.
Reading difficulty, disability or a health condition should not prevent you from taking the car theory test. The key is to request support when you book, rather than waiting until test day.
Support available without evidence
You can listen to the questions and possible answers through headphones in English or Welsh. You can also hear them again if needed. Ask for this voiceover when booking your test.
Support that may require evidence
Depending on your needs, DVSA may be able to arrange:
- extra time for the multiple-choice part
- a member of staff to read questions and record your answers
- a British Sign Language interpreter
- other reasonable adjustments
DVSA decides what support is appropriate. You may be asked for a letter or report from a teacher, doctor, employer or another relevant professional. The evidence should explain your difficulty and why the requested adjustment would help.
How to request support
- Start the official theory-test booking and state that you need support.
- Describe the adjustment you need accurately.
- Send supporting evidence if DVSA asks for it.
- Wait for confirmation of the arrangements before treating the booking as complete.
If online booking is not suitable, use the contact route in the official guidance. Requesting support does not change the test subjects or pass mark; it changes how you can access the test.
Prepare for the supported test
Practise with the same method you expect to use in the test. If you will use voiceover, practise listening without relying entirely on the screen. If you receive extra time, use it to check words such as first, most and safest, not to second-guess every answer.
